- Every year, more than 4 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs. Children make up more than 60 percent of all dog bite victims. These bites result in approximately 12 fatalities
- Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children. Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department.
- Pit Bulls are the most commonly involved dog in attacks (25-40%). Other breeds also commonly involved and thought of as friendly breeds include Labrador and Goldern Retrievers (12%).
How Injuries Occur
- Due to ownership of more exotic animals, including reptiles, snake and lizards bites are increasing across the US.
- Data shows that 91 % of attacks are committed by dogs that are known to the children
Who Is at Risk
- The rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9 years, and the rate decreases as children age.
- Almost two thirds of injuries among children ages four years and younger are to the head or neck region.
- Injury rates in children are significantly higher for boys than for girls.
