Snake Bite Prevention
Snakes and lizards are popular exotic pets, so the risk for being bitten has increased.

  • Find out what local snakes and lizards are common to Mecklenburg County.  Learn what they look like, whether they are poisonous, and where you are most likely to encounter them. Click here for information on North Carolina reptiles
  • If you see a snake or lizard, do not disturb it. Keep in mind that the striking range of a snake is about half of its length.
  • Even though most snakes are not poisonous, unless you have been properly trained avoid picking up or playing with any snake, even one with a severed head can release venom through reflexes for up to an hour after it dies.
  • Many serious snakebites occur when someone deliberately provokes a snake.
  • When hiking in an area known to have snakes avoid areas where snakes may be hiding (rocks, logs) and wear long pants and boots if possible.
  • Tap ahead of you with a walking stick before entering an area with an obscured view of your feet. Snakes will attempt to avoid you if given adequate warning.
  • If you have a pet snake or lizard or are considering one, learn how to handle the reptile safely to avoid being bitten and have first aid equipment available.
If you are a frequent hiker, consider purchasing a snakebite kit (available from hiking supply stores.) Do not use older snakebite kits, such as those containing razor blades and suction bulbs.
